Google Crawling IRC?
Lately, we’ve had this bot on a private IRC network scanning the links:

[OV] MOTD requested by eddie52 (Eddie@xxx-xxx-xx-x.google.com) [irc.xxxxxxxxx.com]
[OV] LINKS ” requested by eddie52 (Eddie@xxx-xxx-xx-x.google.com) [irc.xxxxxxxxx.com]
[WI] eddie07!~Eddie@xxx-xxx-xx-x.google.com (walso)

IPs and hostnames changed to protect the innocent and shy. The IP the bot comes from is inside an IP block belonging to Google. Interesting.

[1:39am] eddie17 «~Eddie@216-239-45-4.google.com» has Quit iRC (Read error: Connection reset by peer)

[8:07pm] eddie25 (~Eddie@216-239-45-4.google.com) has joined. «27 people»
[8:09pm] eddie25 (~Eddie@216-239-45-4.google.com) has parted. «26 people»

It uses several different number combinations after the ‘eddie’.

This bot has been seen numerous times in the past 2 weeks on several channels on the irc.mircx.com network. It joins the channel, does nothing for like a minute, and parts, over and over and over again. Constantly.

Yeah, I’ve seen exactly the same behavior on some channels on GIMPnet. Interesting.

Today eddie08 was observed on a really small non-announced network with only one channel, is it our google overlords trying to do some social network experiments?.

The things it can figure out is basically: MOTD, Topics of channels, names of channels, nicks on channel, real name (etc),. and hostnames of participants.

I am also very curious about what it’s doing. It’s not like it is hanging around long enough to log the chat.

Also at our network an ‘Eddie’ has join with these characteristics.

for example:

[04:38:52] Connecting: eddie07 (Eddie@216-239-45-4.google.com)
[216.239.45.4] {users} [walso]
[04:42:17] Exiting: eddie07 (Eddie@216-239-45-4.google.com)
[216.239.45.4] [eddie07]

I sent google an e-mail about and asked what it was for, just curious. They asked what ip address eddie was using. Since then I haven’t seen him around. Not really my intention to make eddie disappear. He looked harmless enough.

The answer:

Hi Jon,

Thank you for your note. The unusual activity you are observing is part
of an experiment aimed at improving Google’s search quality. Please be
assured that this behavior is only temporary.

If it is adversely affecting your server, please let us know, and we will
stop the activity.

Regards,
The Google Team

this job could be used for gathering data, like name, real name,.. and also as all of us do,we share our knowledge in IRC,we exchange our links,mp3,… so Google Bot can obtian more resource for Google Crawlers.
