Jan. 5 (Bloomberg) — Letter bombs sent to members of the European Parliament in Belgium and Britain exploded and a third suspicious parcel was intercepted by Brussels police, extending a two-week series of attacks on European Union officials.

The attacks are “a criminal conspiracy against democracy,” the parliament’s president, Pat Cox of Ireland, said in a statement.

Prosecutors in Bologna suspect an Italian anarchist group is behind the attacks, Belgium’s Belga news agency said. Bologna prosecutors ordered the seizure of all mail addressed to EU institutions on Dec. 31.
