Google has a pretty small window of opportunity to capitalise on what they’re doing with Google Friend Connect. If you haven’t noticed, over at rizzn.com, I’ve put it up on my blog, and I’ve been pondering replacing Disqus with with the wall widget for use on my comments with Google Friend Connect or possibly Facebook Connect.
Right now, the benefits aren’t real clear as to why you’d wanna do that.
GFC is incredibly easy to install – of all the commenting and ID logins, by far the easiest. I had it up on all pages at Rizzn.com in under five minutes. Pete posted this thing last night that showed you how to install FC “in under 8 minutes,” which really means it takes eight minutes to watch the HOWTO video, and then another five or ten minutes digging through your own code to figure out where to paste it.
The payoff, supposedly, is greater though. With Facebook Connect, any time someone interacts with your pages, something will pop right up there in their timeline. It’s almost the same thing that happens when someone (who is a FriendFeed user) interacts with a Disqus comment box.
Bottom line? You get more users. I’m not sure if it’ll end up working that way with Facebook, but when I had a good level of interaction from FriendFeed users on my Disqus enabled commenting, for every comment left, I’d get a good 10 clicks, and for every two commentors, I’d get at least one more, it seemed.
Facebook users are a whole lot less engaged, though. Will there be the same reward for going through that trouble of replacing your commenting with their wall widget? That’s the stumbling block I’m hitting right now when I consider their system.
What about GFC, though?
As you can see from the graphic up and to the right there, Google is generating some sort of lifestream/status feed type thing, though it’s far from inclusive across the whole system, and most importantly, it generates no traffic for me as a producer.
There’s no point to me replacing my commenting with that widget, basically, because no one’s looking at those feeds as a place to find discussion. It’s just hanging out there being useless.
It leads me to the conclusion that Google has a very short window of opportunity to get their act in gear and do something about lifestreaming … or risk the world wising up and saying “Why do we need this thing, again?”
Just my two cents. Do you folks have any insights I’m missing here?
